still inside my mind. blaaaahhhh
Progress Report (First 100 hours) I started my internship at Manila Broadcasting Company (MBC) – 90.7 Love Radio last April 1, 2013. I was first assigned to organize the IDs that were going to be used for the Aliwan Fiesta and fortunately, I had the same time schedule with my old friend and classmate at Far Eastern University (FEU). I made friends and adjusted easily to my new environment. My supervisor was a bit strict yet kind and understanding, just perfect at how I think supervisors should be. The next day on my site, I was asked to handle the Aliwan Fiesta official twitter and Love Radio Manila’s facebook and twitter account for a while. I was given the power to be the administrator of the said accounts until I was officially assigned as a Social Media Intern for MBC. I was oriented and trained with a partner to handle three accounts including the Yes FM Manila’s facebook and twitter page. I was so happy that I was picked and I felt really privileged. I thought everything was a piece of cake until we realized how stressful managing multiple accounts can be. Stressful in a way that we have to think of something new yet have to keep in mind of how a post should be without forgetting the guidelines given to us. It was critical and hard yet fun. It was so knowledgeable and I gained a lot from it. Personally, it made me a more cautious and responsible netizen as well. What made me happy was when my supervisor at social media said that the bosses were so happy with my performance. Since I was assigned for the Social Media of MBC, I had the advantage of backstage pass and got to be different artists and people. It was an amazing experience even if it was so tiring because we have to stay overnight and work. MBC was so generous for taking care of us interns and gave us free food for the whole Aliwan Fiesta days. I can totally say that I am not just a radio intern at MBC but experience event organizing as well. Progress Report (Last 100 hours) For my last 100 hours of internship, I was actually planning on going to a different field and site. I got accepted to Solar News Channel but I made a very tough decision and decided to continue my other 100 hours at MBC. The good thing is, I know to myself that I somehow made the right decision. I know I could have had a different kind of experience to Solar but my heart says that I should stay. It is indeed a bit cheesy but it felt like home at MBC. I learned a lot more than I expected. I was still made as a social media intern and was assigned to three different radio station Facebook and Twitter accounts of MBC, namely, Love Radio Manila, Yes FM Manila and Easy Rock Manila. I also experienced field work and got to be in a Love Radio event outside MBC. They taught us so much.
My summer 2013 is definitely the most amazing summer I experienced so far. I thank God for the opportunities and chances that He gave me. 200 hours is too short and if I could only wish for more, I definitely would. I know my last day at my internship site was not the last time I’m gonna see those people but I will never be going to be with them like I used to. I’m gonna miss everyone and everything. I’m just so happy with the experience and will forever cherish those moments. I learned a lot not just from work but in life as well. Have you ever experienced being forgotten? Or have you ever been oblivious? Mostly, we are afraid of the things that we cannot control and of the things that are unavoidable. Sometimes, we are not even aware that we fear oblivion.
But what does oblivion mean? For those who are not familiar with this trending topic that is oblivion, by the definition given by the Merriam-Webster dictionary, it is “the fact or condition of forgetting or having forgotten; the condition of being oblivious; the condition or state of being forgotten or unknown”. Perhaps, it is a fear inside all of us. There are people who strive to be famous, do some legacy, and something that will leave a mark on this world for them to be remembered. Personally, it is my inside and kept fear. I am afraid that I have not done enough for this world, and that I will leave it alongside with the rotten flowers that once bloomed in a beautiful garden. For me, being paranoid, it is a sign of rejection and failure. But why do we keep on being afraid on something that is inevitable? In popular culture and mainstream media, perhaps we all know this fictional character that shares the same sentiments as much as I do (and maybe some of you), from John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars. It is a story about a sixteen-year old cancer patient Hazel Grace Lancaster and the seventeen-year old Augutus Waters who was an ex-basketball player and amputee. Without delving more into the plot of the story, it was shown how Augustus fear so much about oblivion for he always dreamed of being a hero, and be remembered as someone important, which did not happen for he died at the end of the story. But he (and us) learned something from Hazel, it is not important if you will die famous or not, or if everyone will remember who you are, for what matters the most is that if someone truly cared for you, it is more than enough and oblivion is something we should not be afraid of. Why do we all want to be remembered? Perhaps it is something that makes us feel important, and if we are important, it just simply feels right, right? We feel loved whenever someone remembers us, even from the weirdest of things. It feels good whenever someone tell you that they remind you of a certain cartoon character, that you crossed their mind when they saw the trailer of the film that you always talked about, or when they saw a picture of your favorite anime and tell you that they thought of you because of it. But we must admit that being forgotten is something inescapable. There will come a time where our generation will be washed out with the new ones, and that we will have to step aside because our moments are already over. Each and every one of us will forget things, our subconscious mind pushing its way through our memories, leaving us nothing but ourselves. But just because we will be oblivious in the future does not mean that it will stop us from being happy at the present time. We may feel incomplete, always longing for something unknown, and paranoid about the things that will happen, but never should it be a hindrance on how we will value our lives and the people that we love. It is through maturity and acceptance that the fact about oblivion, no matter how painful, will still be a fact that we should take. Oblivion is a scary truth, but if we are surrounded with the right people that make us feel more than enough, and those who brings out the best in us, we should be dauntless about the future. This generation has been dubbed as the Millennials or the so called “Generation Y”, most of us are using the internet as our source of information and utilizing it for other things. We, somehow, are dependent on the new technology, especially with the emergence of the social media. It makes our lives easier and simpler because all you have to do is to create an account on a particular social media site, and you’re instantly connected. There are advantages and disadvantages regarding the said medium, and that’s when social media literacy comes into the picture.
What is Social Media Literacy? It is defined as “the access to social media applications, the knowledge, skills, attitudes and self-efficacy of individuals to (appropriately) use social media applications and to analyze, evaluate, share and create social media content.” (Vanwynsberghe, Boudry & Verdegem, 2011). Therefore, it is composed of three dimensions, first is the social media access, then, the social media competences, and lastly, the social media use. Based on my research, you are actually considered social media literate if you have an access on the said medium. But there are levels on determining how literate you are when it comes to social media. As said in the definition, what you do on social media and how you utilize it is also a factor. You may have access on social media but if you are not using it the right way, your level of being social media literate is not complete. It suggests that we should all be critical on what we post, share, comment, and even like on the said medium. It was once said that social media is our present and future. It is the technology that is shaping not only our culture, but our tradition, and personal perspectives as well. If learning more about social media and social media literacy is important, why not delve on it by teaching its ethics and literacy to the younger generation? Personally, I would want to have social media literacy included in our education system. As I have said earlier, there are advantages and disadvantages in social media. If not used the right way, for example, cyber bullying and spreading of wrong information, it could damage not only the users but our entire community as well. If it would be taught in school, even for just a brief lesson or discussion, it could actually make a great impact for the better utilization of social media. Social media is something that we would pass on to the next generation; therefore, we must influence them the right way by teaching the importance of social media literacy. Social media is considered a very powerful tool, and will either be the destruction of us, or will be used for the betterment of each and every one. Having enough knowledge and awareness about such powerful medium is vital for every internet citizens. Deep understanding and being responsible will be our anchor for this global village we are currently living in, so we might as well treat it right. She was born in a place she cannot fathom. It was hurtful, sad, and unwelcoming. She did not belong to that place. She wants to get away from them and from them all. She will have to stand for herself, that’s what she knew and that’s what she should do and so she did. She somehow went away and tried to have a good life. She met a man whom she loved until she died. But in-between the things that she felt and touched, is a story that will never be forgotten. It was about her life.
We all have a story to tell, some are better and some are not so better. But in the end, it is the message that we want to send, despite the fact that it all depends on our own perspective, the core message will always be the same. It is to touch and feel. It is when you finished. It is when you think about it. It is when it finally traveled and found its way to your heart. This is her story (or maybe not), the core message of an unnamed girl. Because somehow, to know someone is not just to know their name, it is to know their depth. She grew up with abusive brothers and sisters, hurting her physically and mentally. Saying negative things to her and apparently, literally throwing rocks at her head. Her parents? She cannot say so much about them for she felt that they did not care. She grew up timid yet hopeful. Never did she build anger towards the people that hurt her. Pessimism was never in her vocabulary. For her, it was always a day with rainbows and a little rain. As she cannot find any genuine love from the people that were supposed to love her, she worked somehow far from them and fortunately found a man who did. She went away with that man and built a family with him. They were blessed with three boys and three girls. The man said he genuinely love her, but that might be an exaggeration. “Enough Love” might suit his actions for he found lust to another girl. He said it was not like he meant it to happen, it happened anyway though. For her, it was like huge drops of water coming from the clouds. A storm, yes, a storm is what it is called. Not that it was the only storm that she had for she had many storms. Her health was one of the storms. But being cheated by her health and husband at the same time was perhaps the biggest of them all, she thought. She was not getting any younger but her children and grandchildren give her the rainbow. As to she was not getting any younger, she was not getting any better as well. It was failing and her physical body is giving up. She felt the love from her children and grandchildren, and of course, her husband. She forgave them all, all those who hurt her because pessimism was never in her vocabulary. She was afraid though, very afraid. Who will not be? It will somehow be a scary thought that you will have to leave this place, wouldn’t it? But then she got her strength, not from her health but from her heart. Perhaps, it was her time to go, she thought. She knows that her time is ticking and saw someone ready to meet her from ‘that’ peaceful place. She packed her bags on her mind and left. At least the girl can say that she had lived peacefully and died like that, as well. But her husband was not able to apologize to her though. He had no idea that he was already forgiven. Maybe it’s not her story after all. (Inspired by the author’s grandmother’s story) I wonder what the other people from another galaxy/universe looks like… do they look like us or do they look like those of resemblance to jar jar binks? What if the color of their trees is blue and their ocean is green? Do they have different languages as well? How advanced are they? What does their buildings look like? What if they only have one president? What if there is someone who looks exactly like me? What if someone compatible for me to be my future husband is there? How am I going to be with him if our technology is not able to? I was just kidding about the latter but what if my questions are not crazy sounding? I have been talking to myself lately and got too many questions for me to answer. I just want to know their world and how they grew on it. I want to know everything about their civilization, or if they have religion… The kind of culture that they have, how was it like? Are they a matriarchal society? Do they have Jesus as well? Or he named himself differently in order to save those people from their sins? Was he crucified there or was accepted by the people unlike us? Who is their Albert Einstein? Who is their Bill Gates? Who is their Leonardo Da Vinci? What is their Eiffel Tower? Do they hate math too? Do they believe in ghosts, vampires, and other mythological and legendary creatures? How many world wars did they have? Or haven’t had any yet? What if their heart is placed on their right side? Do they have racism on their world? I hope they don’t because that thing sucks big time. I wonder how great their books must be like… what kind of films do they show to people? Is it of quality acting? Do they have the amazing garlic bread? Or grilled cheese sandwich? What kind of transportation do they have? Do they have flying cars already? What if those who died here on earth are being transported to that other world? and vice versa? Or if they died in that other world again, they will just be transported again into another different world? And so on? What if that is the kind of afterlife that we have? What if we are all just reincarnation from another planet? What if there is someone from another world is thinking and typing everything that I have been typing as well? Goodnight.
Man by nature is Selfish or Man by nature is Good
Man by nature is Selfish and Man by nature is Good. What is the real nature of man? What is the real nature of us all? Is it something measurable? Is it something that can be done through study research? Evolutionists said that earth is millions of years old. Is that span of time enough for us humans to know what we really are by nature? Our nature, in my own definition, is something that we do unconsciously. Something that we do yet we do not really know. These are our action that just happens in a spur of the moment -- a subconscious reaction on things. Somehow more like a reflex kind of reaction. But what are we really by nature? Are we really selfish or good? That question is one of the hardest. Because for me,both is right. 'Man by nature is selfish' is defined not in a bad way but still, it is somehow hard to accept. I really want to say that we, by nature, is good because we really are but at the same time I cannot say for sure because we are selfish. But in order to really know my view on what kind of nature we humans have, depends on the kind of view of I, as an individual. The question is somewhat similar to what is always being asked: "Is the glass 'half-empty' or 'half-full'?" And the answer depends on the individual's view in life and things. If someone answered that the glass is 'half-empty', then I will assume that if that same person is asked whether man by nature is selfish or good, I think that person will answer "selfish" since we all know that Thomas Hobbes perception on that is somehow negative and pessimistic. On the other hand, if an individual answered glass 'half-full', it indicates and describes optimism and positivity. I will assume that, he/she believes that man by nature is good. And I am a very optimistic person. I have no reason not to be so I will firmly and will stand that we, human beings is good by nature. Deputy Prime Minister Good Afternoon Madame Speaker and Members of the House. I will tackle about How poor grammar online affects the economy and How good grammar online reflect you as a person in reality.
Strengthening PM’s case: In posting things online, like comments on Facebook, checking on what you wrote and its grammar is as vital as speaking proficiently in front of a lot of people. Because by doing so, it will mean that: You care, you are detailed-oriented and that you are trustworthy. Caroline Wall said that we must not leave nothing to interpretation. You say what you mean without hiding behind vaguely worded sentences or possible misunderstandings. Introduction: Most of the companies nowadays hire people with decent social media accounts and those who utilize it with good grammar. According to Pete Kazanjy, president of a talent acquisition company TalentBin, Facebook comments are “miniature writing samples”, that if you are spelling things wrong and make grammatical errors, then maybe you are not what they need in their company. Caroline Wall, IBM Social Content Editor, said that “Proper utilization of punctuation improves clarity and enhances your words with a level of professionalism.” Now, if the job seekers cannot utilize Facebook and other social media sites properly and decently, how can they expect to be accepted in the professional world? Thus, the economy is affected because of one’s poor grammar. Simple and exaggerated as it may seem, but with a higher rate of unemployment that rose up to 7.5% according to Labor Force Survey last 2013, everyone is affected. What if it is due to one’s incapacity to be professional enough? So What? Since most of us here in this room are graduating students, seeking for a job is now somehow our priority. If we cannot build “our brand” professionally in social media, especially on Facebook, the companies and employers will most probably not hire us. Nowadays, it is not just one’s resume that the companies look at but at their social media accounts as well and leaves an impression and judgment on how you are as person and as a professional. Why? The economy is affected because of one’s lack of written proficiency that is not accepted in the professional world. Caroline Wall also mentioned that “It is important to represent yourself in the best possible way – and the key to that is by being grammatically correct.” Jenna Allock of GradTouch.com said that if one’s spelling and grammar is poor, his/her ability to communicate is “Hampered”. Example: We Filipinos are known for our proficiency, especially in the English language, may it be written or verbal type of communication. If one’s practice on Facebook and other social media accounts is lacking on proper grammar and spelling, it will affect the way they think and the way they function for poor grammar and spelling is considered as laziness and poor execution of one’s thoughts. One is more likely not to be accepted for job due to his/her inability to communicate properly. Thus, it can only mean that you cannot represent yourself and your brand online and will give an impression that you are most probably like that in real life as well. Conclusion: This goes to show that correct grammar is vital and must always be observed online, even if it’s your comments on Facebook. Yes, we are all humans and we do make mistakes but it will be better if we will do it less or if possible, not at all. It will help you be better professionally and of course as a person. It is also important that you deliver your messages clearly in order to avoid misunderstandings and misinterpretations. As I propose, it only means that we must all have our comments on Facebook with correct grammar and even spellings. If you are applying for a job, one must always remember to do everything professionally even in social media. One’s public image is also at stake in social media and therefore must always check the grammar of the things that they post, comment on and other things that they do online. Presenting yourself professionally makes you professional. What do questions do?
Questions are asked by human beings in order to answer the things that they are curious about. The purposes of “questions” are for us to be able to gain knowledge with the things that we usually or entirely do not know about. It is a beautiful human instinct that is “asked” by people to know more about things. It is our way of learning wit and wisdom. There are some questions that we asked to ourselves, and without doing so, we will not be able to do things for it will mean that a person that do not ask himself is not curious. And just like questions, curiosity is a basic human thing. In order to fill one’s curiosity, questions pops up in our minds. What is involved in thinking about thinking? A functioning human brain is a thinking mind. Therefore, our “brain” is involved in thinking about thinking. Messages are delivered from the things that we feel, see, hear, taste and smell. Senses are vital in order for our brain to “think”. Why do you value teaching values? Most of the people who teach values are the older ones for they are more experienced and considered more learned. I value teaching values for I get to share my experiences and learnings to other people, not only with those who are younger than I am but for any age as well. Everyone wants to live in a better place and most of us believe that in order to do that, we pass and teach the values to other people, especially to the younger ones. |
